Our third week of healthy back-to-school lunch recipes was a real hit! From homemade pizza rolls to toasted Cuban sandwiches, we’ve “healthified” processed foods and have hidden healthy foods within sweet treats for a deceptively delicious twist.

    Yes, they do! I try to encorporate seasonal veggies/fruits into my childs lunch as the seasons change. I think this keeps things more exciting and their diet upkeep!

    Our lunches change because of the fresh fruit. It is hard to find good fruit in the dead of winter in Iowa. We will do homemade applesauce or canned fruit from the summer.

    I have a picky eater, so getting him to eat any fruit or veggie is a challenge. He has his favorites, and we tend to stick to them (carrot sticks, applesauce, apricot fruit leather). I do include seasonal veggies, for example, yesterday I packed hummus with carrot sticks, zucchini sticks and cucumber sticks. He ate the carrots but left the rest. I figure if he keeps seeing new veggies, eventually one may cross his lips!

    My kids lunches definitely change with the seasons. My son eats more “hot lunches” from school, we serve more soup and cooked food in general. In the summer we eat salad almost every day for lunch, in winter we hardly ever do.

    Our daughter is only 1 so she hasn’t gone through too many seasons yet, but we really try to focus on produce that’s ‘in season”. Not only does it usually taste better, but it’s cheaper too! We freeze a lot of stuff from the garden to use in soups and other hearty comfort foods to get us through the midwest winters.

    My 8 yr old lunch requests do change with the seasons. My daughter has never been one of those kids that always wants the same thing. In the Fall and winter seasons which are fast upon us she requests more soups, stews and pastas. I like to include a bit of bread or half a wrap to bulk out the meal, especially if she is just having soup. My daughter attends a small charter school where they don’t provide school lunches so I try to be as creative and varied as possible with her lunches to keep them exciting for her. I also try to incorporate as many of the food groups as possible in her lunch. Favourites include plums and apples (in season), Dried fruits are popular in winter, fresh carrots and lettuce (esp during summer), yoghurts and cottage cheese pots, assorted cheeses and of course a small amount of sweets for dessert like a few cookies or a pot of pudding.

    Lunches change by the day -always sandwiches though and Flat out bread since I dicovered it!

    Lunches change because what I’m making changes. I use leftovers a lot for lunches, so if we had corned beef for dinner, they get that in a sandwich or wrap the next day. I also stick with seasonal fruit and veg for better nutrition. Spring means lots of salads, fall and winter bring about lots of heartier meals

    This is my son’s first year packing his lunches for school. However just with making lunches in general yes, it does change with the season’s. In the summer it was more fruits and lighter sandwiches etc. No one wants to eat a heavy meal in the summer. Now its started to get colder it seems he wants more veggies and soups, warmer meals. He still loves wraps and, sandwiches though.

    I am in college, so while I don’t make kiddo’s lunches, I do make my own. As the seasons change and the weather gets colder, soup at hand replaces smoothies and hot chocolate makes its way back into my cabinents. However, other than that, my diet honestly does not change too much. I simply strive for balance and nutrition. Making wraps stuffed with fresh produce is always a good bet!

    He seems to want to eat more when it gets colder. During the summer when it is hot all he wants to do is drink. Now that it is cooler all he wants to do is eat. Seems he can’t get enough. I have to keep more snacks and even send some food with him during the day now.

    Yes they tend to eat more in the winter. It is like they are storing it away for the winter.
